News Letter of USCF for March, 2000

The USCF held the press conference for the First Session of "US-China Forum" on March 16, 2000 at Beijing International Club (3:30~4:30 p.m.).

There are many social figures and distinguished guests presented at the press conference:

Chai Zemin, the first Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., General Advisor of the USCF
Howard H.S. Zhao, professor from Yale University, Senior Advisor of the USCF
Harold Weaver, Research Fellow from Harvard University
Zhang Yijun, the former Director of Division of North America of Foreign Diplomatic Department, also Director of Political Consultativ Conference
Kenneth Jarrett, the First Secretary of U.S. Embassy in Beijing
William R. Palmer, the First Secretary for Press of U.S. Embassy in Beijing
William M. Zarit, the Deputy Senior Commercial Officer of U.S. Embassy in Beijing
Dr. Zhang Shouying, from the People's Daily (Overseas Edition)
Wang Sujuan, Deputy Director of foreign Affairs Office of China Daily Tang Ying, from China Daily (Special Edition)

There are also about 20 media organizations attended the press conference (please see the attached name list).

Mr. Chuck Cha, the Public Affair Supervisor of USCF, hosted the press conference.

After announcement of the start of press conference and an introduction of honorable guests, the Executive Director Mr. Larry L. Lee provided the news to the Press. The United States and China Foundation will hold a celebration on Apr. 25th to 27th, 2000 in Manhattan, New York, to the First Session for "US-China Forum" named "Writing New Pages in Sino-US Relations---A 21st Century Perspective". Further on, Mr. Lee made a brief introduction of the significance of the "US-China Forum" as well as the progress proceeding with USCF since 1992, the year of its establishment.

Shortly after Mr. Larry Lee's news press speech, the journalists from news media called for questions concerned. They are journalists from the Economic Daily, the Economic Information Daily Xinhua News Agency, China Financial & Economic News and Time-Life News service. General Advisor Mr. Chai Zemin, Senior Advisor Dr. Howard Zhao, Executive Director Mr. Larry Lee and the Press Officer Mr. William Palmer received questions and seriously provided answers toward the media. The press conference lasted for an hour.

Continually, journalists from both China Daily and CCTV separately made personal interviews to General Advisor Mr. Chai Zemin and Dr. Howard Zhao on specific questions they figured from USCF's activities.

The press conference followed with a banquet at the Window of the Century in the CITIC Building and all distinguished guests, who attended the press conference, were invited. Other honorable guests, Mr. Paul P. Blackburn, the Minister-Counselor for Press and Cultural Affair with Mrs. Pek Blackburn, Mr. Qin Huasun, former Chinese Ambassador to the UN, also Director of Political Consultative Conference and Mr. Zhen Ronglai, the Chief Editor of the People's Daily, all invited and attended the banquet.
